The Rotary Club of Bhubaneswar chartered in 1965 has been involved in various activities in the service of the Community in and around Bhubaneswar with special emphasis on Adult Literacy, Health, Hygiene & Sanitation as well as career guidance and Vocational Training to selected sections of the Youth , Handicapped and the unfortunate.

Bhubaneswar the State Capital of Orissa TEMPLE CITY is one of the fastest growing Urban Complex and along with its Twin “ Cuttack “ has a population of about 17 lakhs. There are a number of satellite settlements within a radius of 30 k.m.

With the limited infrastructure facilities and support services there is a serious problem of availability of basic and rudimentary Health facilities, Drinking water and other essentials causing chain reaction in poor for Health, Literacy and Hygiene.

While the Rotary Club of Bhubaneswar continues to have regular programs of Health Check up Camps, Eye Camps, Guidance in School & Colleges, Drinking Water supply in schools etc. It undertook a detailed survey of the COMMUNITY needs which brought into focus the necessity of:

  1. Upgrading of Blood Banks in the Capital & provision of STATE OF THE ART facilities for manufacture of Blood Components / Aphresis.

  2. Mobilizing & Motivating Voluntary Blood Donations to improve Blood Supply.

  3. Constituting Community Centers for Adult Literacy and Counseling for better QUALITY OF LIFE with intensified approach for improving AWARENESS in the basic area of Literacy, Health, Hygiene & Sanitation. The club also provided support of the Community Center with participation of the local Residents for a self sustained unit to provide the facility.

Short supply of Blood :- The Blood Banking practices in the State were outdated. The Municipal & Capital Hospital Blood Banks in Bhubaneswar have been fully equipped with state of the art equipment with Aphaeresis capability for the first time in Eastern Region for improving availability of safe blood – Blood components and eliminate dependence for blood components from outside the state.

HEALTH, HYGIENE & SANITATION:- Rotary Community Corps have been formed in the Chosen Centers as adopted Awareness Centers to Develop local leadership and participation of the Community and encouraging self help attitude.

Health Check up camps being organized in all adopted centers. Health Cards given to 1000 patients of different centers with regular follow up and medicines resulting in full cure of their diseases. 3 lives were saved by timely assistance for special Medical Care.

Importance of the Personal Hygiene, Cleanliness & Sanitation of their houses and surroundings areas is being stressed by personal visits and interaction by the Volunteers / Rotarians in the adopted Centers.

First Aid, Malaria Eradication, Safe Drinking Water, Personal Hygiene, Child Immunization, Literacy, Sunstroke Prevention, Child Labour, Re-productive health is being stressed in all the Centers by the Audio Video Program through the Mobile Van with Video Cassettes and talks by experts.

It was realized that Audio visual presentation and personal interaction through Mobile Van lacked direct involvement of the beneficiaries. For their involvement in this activity and for measurable results as also for continued intensive focus on Health, Hygiene & Sanitation 90 beneficiaries with +2 qualification were selected from amongst the residents of the Awareness Centers and trained by St. John Ambulance and qualified doctors for First Aid and basic health care. The Selected beneficiaries gave a voluntary undertaking to work as “ Community Health Workers “ and spearhead the program on Health, Hygiene & Sanitation by interaction in the houses of the residents in their own areas and play catalytic role in improving the Quality of life in the community.

A First Aid kit with usual auxiliaries and medicines has been given to each beneficiary to enable them to meet the emergencies in their communities. The medicines will be replenished by the volunteers by taking actual charges.

Counseling session on Health Hygiene and Sanitation by experts with Charts & models on different subjects on pre-planned basis are being organized to motivate and involve all the residents.

Literacy :

  • Based on the survey of the Adult illiterates, 9 Adult Literacy centers are in operation with average attendance of about 70%. 600 Adults have been made literate. The teacher is chosen from amongst the Community and given a stipend.

  • Mobile Library, called, " Janasikhya Pathagar" designed by SRC for Adult Education has been introduced in six of the Literacy Centres for inculcating good reading habits and motivating illiterates to attend classes.

Shelter & Environmental Protection:-

Super Cyclone in 1999 affected the Program. 2 Rotary Volunteers from Our International Partners R.C. of Brighton were present at that time. An in-depth review was under taken to see as to how the challenges posed by the changed situation could be met.

A project to reconstruct 9 Community Centers which were destroyed in the Super cyclone and equip them with furniture, models, charts etc for continued focus on Literacy, Health, Hygiene and Sanitation was taken up.

A Second Project of Construction of 20 low Cost shelter with 20 Toilet Blocks and 15 septic Tanks and Soak pit those whose houses were damaged in the super cyclone and were below the poverty line and had their own land. The beneficiaries were identified in advance. Precaution was taken to ensure that there was no succession problem on the land in case the land was jointly owned.

We continue to Dream and have a VISION plan to implement integrated projects for the benefit of the community with support from benevolent donors and organization for the Projects covering:

  1. Health Areas – Diagnostic & Testing facilities

  2. Special facilities for Hemolytic patients

  3. Intensified Awareness amongst the Community for better Quality of Life

  4. Vocational Training Facilities at Village level to provide opportunity for self-employment
